We have scoured our brains and the internet for the best study hacks to help your brain remember information. Memory is a muscle. Get it in shape. This well help you to remember quicker and more easily. This will help you in your exams and in your life.

1. Walk Before An Exam

It’s been proven that exercise can boost your memory and brain power. Research conducted by Dr. Chuck Hillman of the University of Illinois provides evidence that about 20 minutes exercise before an exam can improve performance.

2. Speak Out Loud Instead of Simply Reading

Although this may make you look a little crazy, give it a go! You will be surprised how much more you can remember when you’ve said it out loud. Warning: Don’t try this in a crowded library!

3. Reward Yourself With A Treat

There are many ways to integrate a reward system into your habits so you learn how to study for exams more efficiently. Here’s a simple way to motivate yourself to study with Gummy Bears:

4. Teach What You Have Learned

The best way to test if you really understand something is to try to teach it to someone else. If you can’t get anyone to listen to you explain the Pythagorean Theorem, why not teach a class of stuffed animals!

5. Create Mental Associations

The ability to make connections is not only an easier way to remember information, but it’s the fuel of creativity and intelligence. Steve Jobs famously said “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something”.

Mind Maps are an easy way to connect ideas by creating a visual overview of different connections. Read more about the benefits of using Mind Maps to learn here.

6. Draw Diagrams

Drawing diagrams will help you to visualise information which would be hard to describe. This creates a visual memory in your mind which can be recalled in an exam. You may even be asked to draw or label diagrams such as the human heart in your exam so get practicing!

7. Times New Roman is the Fastest Font to Read

Simply put – there’s a reason why Times New Roman is the default font on most applications!

8. Use Apps to Block Distracting Sites

The SelfControl app helps you to avoid distractions by blocking websites for a certain amount of time. Discover more student apps to make student life easier in our blog post “12 Student Apps You Don’t Want to Miss!”.

9. Watch a Documentary on the Topic

Documentaries are an entertaining way of compacting an entire story into a short timeframe. This will help you remember key details from a story plus you may even get extra credit for mentioning that you took the initiative and watched a film about the topic!

Check out the infographic in this blog post which helps you decide which documentary to watch.

10. Search Google Like a Pro

Save time when researching sources online by mastering the biggest search engine in the world; Google. Follow the tips in this image to find what you need at your fingertips:

11. Create Flashcards for Quick Memory Buzz

Quickly test your knowledge of key concepts, definitions, quotes and formulas with flashcards.

12. Take Regular Study Breaks

When your brain is working, you need to take regular study breaks to help your brain absorb more information but also to keep you motivated and focused when you are working. Take a short break after 45-50 minutes study as your focus and concentration will become impaired after this period, anything new after 1 hour 30 minutes does not get assimilated.

13. Listen to the Correct Type of Music

In our blog post “Music for Studying: 10 Tips to Pick the Best Study Music” we looked into the area of how the correct types of music can lead to more productive studying by elevating your mood. Have you made your Mozart Spotify playlist yet?

14. Make Your Study Space Portable

We may be creatures of habit with favourite seats in the library but information retention actually improves when you vary the places where you study. Check out this Buzzfeed video for more study hacks for exams:

15. Practice, Practice, Practice…

Practicing sample answers to past exam questions can help train your brain to retrieve information. The same applies to Reading Tests. Create realistic, exam-like condition and test your understanding by using our new Quiz tool. Try our general Knowledge Quiz below:

16. Don’t Stay Up All Night Before an Exam

Make sure to get adequate rest the nights leading up to your exams. When you sleep, your brain assimilates the information you have learned when studying so getting a good night’s sleep will help you remember those pesky maths formulas you need for your exam!

17. Discover News Ways to Learn

Trying new study methods can help you find what really works for you. Use technology to your advantage by watching educational TED Talks or downloading useful dictionary apps for example. Read more about the benefits of learning how to study for exams with technology .

18. Use Scents or Gum to Jog Your Memory

This may seem a bit random but spraying an unfamiliar scent while you’re studying is one of the study methods that can help jog your memory when you spray it again just before an exam. Chewing a strange kind of gum will work the same way.

19. Study in a Group

Studying in a group can help you collect new insights to enhance your learning experience. The GoConqr groups tool is an innovative spin on the traditional study group formula. Our Groups tool helps you share resources, discuss ideas and interact with members of your team or group project. Sign up here to get started!

20. Meditate

Meditation is one of the study methods that can help students stay focused when studying. Not only will meditation help you concentrate when studying but it will help reduce pre-exam stress as it improves both mental and physical health.

Our final piece of advice for those of you sitting exams is to stay positive. It’s amazing how a positive attitude can impact on your exam results or motivate you to complete that assignment when all you want to do is go to bed!

Met dank: Essie Bester – Solidariteit Loopbaan

Gepubliseer: 4 November 2019

Artikel: https://jouloopbaan.solidariteit.co.za/hoe-kies-ek-die-regte-beroep/

Wanneer dit by loopbaankeuses kom, word sommige foute meer gereeld as ander gemaak.

Bronne https://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/the-seven-common-career-mistakes-students-make-1.3997388

The post Hoe kies ek die regte beroep? appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.

Bronne: Akeso: https://www.akeso.co.za/

The post Klop só eksamenstres… appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.

Despite their training and experience, a full 74% of new leaders say they are unprepared for the new role, and in 18 months nearly half of them disappoint or fail entirely. In many cases, leaders either judge too quickly, making snap decisions that prove to be ill advised, or wait interminably to “gather more facts,” only for the critical moment to slip away.

Here are three strategies leaders can use to make decisions more effectively when they’re new to an organization.

First, manage the urge to “do something” right away. Having been courted, you will be eager to prove that hiring you was the right decision, but it’s critical to learn first and act second. At one company where I consulted, a newly hired senior executive, who was known as a marketing wunderkind, began making sweeping changes in the first month. She had great ideas but insisted on pushing an agenda before knowing her colleagues and the organizational culture. She ended up being removed in scarcely more than a year.

Experienced leaders, who may feel certain they already know the correct moves to make, instead need to listen, observe, and suspend judgment. This is especially challenging because others around you may be expecting quick action. One CFO I worked with restrained his urge to make immediate changes by taking notes about what he was learning in the early days of his tenure and recording some early conclusions. As he reflected on his notes later, he was able to see that he had initially held an incorrect assumption about his colleagues. Discovering this blind spot proved vital to his ability to lead a pivotal change later on.

Second, make sure you’re talking to a wide variety of sources. When you don’t know who’s a reliable source of information, it’s easy to be overly influenced by one person’s or group’s interpretation of events. Inevitably, there will be a few people who are eager to bend the ear of a new leader — and most have an agenda.

At one Fortune 500 restaurant company I advised, a new president spent the first part of his tenure traveling, talking to people at all levels, and learning about what they did and what resources they needed. As he visited various locations, he wandered through the dining area and the kitchens. He showed curiosity about how things were done and even tried his hand at a few tasks. Critically, he didn’t interrogate, interview, or make people feel he was conducting an assessment. His credibility skyrocketed as a result. People became less cautious and more eager to share their experiences and ideas. Under his leadership, the company had record-breaking success, precisely because he gained such deep insight about the operations, people, and culture.

Third, select one critical area of focus for the year. It’s dangerous to move too quickly in a new role, but it’s perilous to appear as if you’re not making any changes at all. Selecting one area of focus helps people direct their efforts toward it and evaluate progress. In the initial period of learning, a new leader can see what the likely trajectory of the company will be without major changes and identify what would make the most dramatic difference.

In a turnaround situation, harsh decisions may need to be made quickly, but it’s often easier rally support for a critical focus area when a threat is looming. It can be much harder to mobilize your team when the company appears to be thriving, because success can breed complacency. One senior executive I advised found reason for concern during a major acquisition, even though the acquired company was wildly successful, because he found evidence that its focus on customers was slipping. He identified this as his chief focus area, because he knew a slip in customer satisfaction would eventually torpedo sales. Accordingly, he changed performance standards and quickly removed the senior managers who openly disagreed that improvement was needed. The business went on to deliver results 30% better than projected before the acquisition.

Leaders’ actions in the early days of their roles create an impression that’s hard to shake later. Managing the urge to make an early mark, gleaning information from all parts of the organization, and deciding on your primary area of focus will help you build the knowledge and political capital you need to succeed in your new position.

The post Why New Leaders Should Make Decisions Slowly appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.

Met Dank: Solidariteit Wereld – Deur Dr. Eugene Brink

Publiseer: 15 Julie 2019

Ek kan net sê ek is oneindig dankbaar daarvoor,” sê Esté Meyer Jansen, ondersoekende joernalis by Maroela Media.

The post Die ekonomiese waarde van Afrikaans! appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.

With thanks: Solidarity World – By Mandy-Michelle Thackwray

Published: 11 July 2019

Article: https://gildes.solidariteit.co.za/en/healthy-habits-for-a-busy-life/

The other day a colleague mentioned to me that in the past, you had very busy periods at work, then things slowed down a bit, until the next big thing came along. However, this is no longer the case. There are no more periods at work where we are allowed “breathers”. We are all swamped with too much to do and too little time.

Many people complain that they do not have enough time to plan a family vacation, not even mentioning spending enough quality time with their families. Long term goals are clouded by just getting through the moment. Learning and instilling new habits can help you take control of your life and keep track in a much more efficient manner.

Keep it simple. Start off by identifying the top five things you need to do daily or weekly to keep your life on track. Do this by writing them down. To help you stay accountable to these habits, categorize them into four key areas:

1. Personal reflection
Take (and not make) time to “time out” and do some personal reflection. Use this time to meditate, keep a journal, or do any small activity that you enjoy. People who do this get the opportunity to refocus and end up being more joyful.

2. Professional reflection
You probably find that you get to the office, open up your emails and immediately get sucked into the spiral of all the tasks you need to do. Dedicate a small amount of time to yourself at a set time every day to do a mind dump (getting rid of all the noise in your head) and plan your tasks according to priority. The goal is to give an organised structure to your day.

3. Build and maintain relationships
Our day is usually a rushed exercise between getting kids ready for school, attending meetings, rushing conversations with colleagues, getting through dinner, our bath and bedtime routine, catching up with your spouse and finally collapsing in bed. Take ownership of your relationship with others, as connection, a sense of community and belonging is crucial for your well-being.

4. Physical and mental health
Make time for some exercise. If you don’t have time and money for the gym, take your kids for a walk. Eat healthy, read a book and listen to inspiring music. To be the best you, you need to take care of yourself.

Make a concerted effort to make enforce these habits. You deserve it!

The post Healthy habits for a busy life! appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.

With thanks: Solidarity World – By Emsie Martin

Published: 24 July 2019

Article: https://finansies.solidariteit.co.za/en/unique-ways-of-saving-money/

July is the saving awareness month and this year’s #CrazywaystoSave theme is the ideal encourager to make you and other South Africans invest in your own financial freedom in order to ensure your absolute happiness.

DebtSafe would like to show you the latest statistics to encourage you to get your savings going:

61% of respondents say they are saving money. 38% of these say that they save occasionally and 23% intimated that they save regularly.

Most (55%) of this group of individuals (who save money) confirm that the money they save is for their own or their children’s tuition and/or education costs, while others (45%) confirm that they are saving for a rainy day.

The feedback from the majority of the so-called “savings respondents” (68%) emphasise that they use a savings product, for instance a savings account, to put away money. In addition to this type of savings product they also use mechanisms such as short-term investments, stokvel-related products and/or a piggy bank.

Hopefully by this time you are properly motivated to become part of the savings generation.

Here are a few interesting saving habits that you could consider:

Why not rather use cloth serviettes instead of paper serviettes and in so doing reducing and avoiding waste?

Use reusable products.

Collect bottles and cans and trade them in for cash.

Check what food and products there are in the discount bin.

Use the shopping mall closest to your home (or close to your place of work) and do research beforehand about discount items. You will save on fuel and grocery costs.

Buy in bulk, but only if it really is a special offer. If it is too much, share with somebody.

Cut out the weekly grocery outings and if you do have to pop into a shop, do it just before closing time. That half-price roast chicken or butternut soup will still taste delicious.

If you have to eat in a restaurant, first ask about the special of the day if it is not shown somewhere.

Just think about how much you save on electricity if it is seven degrees outside but you use hot-water bottles and blankets instead of the air-conditioner or electric heater.

For the gym fanatic – cancel your gymnasium contract and do your own effective exercises at home.

Avoid brand names, they usually last just as long as a cheaper make.

No debt = more savings

Carla Oberholzer, debt adviser at DebtSafe, emphasises that you will get nowhere with your savings if your debt is extravagant and out of control. There are four recommended methods that you can try to fix your debt problems so that you can really begin to put away money.

Use the avalanche method – first pay off your debt with the highest interest rate(s) and then the rest of your debt.

What about the snowball method to nudge you psychologically to pay off your debt? Pay off your smallest debt or credit first and move on to your next debt.

The combined option of the above-mentioned two methods is called the blizzard method – which is also a good way of trying to rectify your debt situation.

And lastly – if you are trying to protect your assets and are looking for a specific route for rectifying your serious burden of debt, do adequate research and consider a regulated process such as debt counselling.

The post Unique ways of saving money… appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.

Met Dank: Solidariteit Wereld – Deur Anja van den Berg

Publiseer: 6 Augustus 2019

Artikel: https://welstand.solidariteit.co.za/die-baie-gesigte-van-werkverslawing/

The post Die baie gesigte van werkverslawing appeared first on Aldes Training Academy.
